Used prom dress sale helps families save money - KOMU 8

MEXICO - As a mother sending her daughter to prom, Kristen Blair knows how prom can cost families a pretty penny.

"I have a teenage daughter who is 16, and it is very expensive to get dresses," Blair said.

Blair is also the owner of A Cut Above Hair Company, a hair salon in Mexico. She said she sees people come into her salon who spend hundreds of dollars on the special evening.

Blair said she saw many parents try to save money by selling old dresses online. Her community did not have an event where girls could try on dresses in person, but Blair thought the idea of reusing old dresses could help families save money.

"I thought, let's just have it here," she said.

A Cut Above Hair Company created a Facebook event where community members could donate their old dresses. Blair said many people reached out to the salon and donated. The salon then held an event Sunday for people to buy the used items at a discounted price.

The donated dresses included all types of styles and sizes.

Blair said she thinks buying a used prom dress is a great way to save money.

"What's the point of spending 400 dollars on a dress you wear once? This is a great way to find affordable, pretty dresses," she said.

The dresses that were not sold will be donated to local used clothing stores.
