Song Review: 'Songland' Star Sam DeRosa Kickstarts Promising Career with "Pill For This" Single

When Los Angeles-based Sam DeRosa found her way into my email with the reflective and sincere "Hard To Love" back in May 2018, it was her captivating vocal performance that impressed the most.

Fast forward to today, the young artist is basking in the spotlight of being a recent contestant on NBC's Songland. Promising independent songwriters have already penned hits for the likes of The Jonas Brothers ("Greenlight") and Meghan Trainor ("Hurt Me"). In a blast from the past, DeRosa got her chance to serve musical guest, and former Berklee classmate, Charlie Puth a potential radio smash.

SPOILER ALERT: While DeRosa officially finished the episode in the Top 3, the emotive and heartbreaking "Pill For This" was not selected by Puth to record. His loss. Tweaked and produced by Shane McAnally, DeRosa can now use the effort to put a fire under her much deserved future music career.

"Pill For This" will resonate with every person who has experienced relationship heartbreak and needed comfort and reassurance that life will go on. While DeRosa understands she should be angry at her former lover, searching for that rebound fling, she can't help but remember the good times. Kept up in the middle of the night by those memories, she longs for a dose of medication to ease the pain.

However, we all know it's never that easy. Instead of enjoying a night out with friends, dancing with strangers, she finds herself stuck in the past. "I don't wanna be two years done, still messed up, halfway over you, I don't wanna be back to square one, 'cuz I messed up with someone new," she sings with a mix of angst and sadness on the hook.

As with "Hard To Love", it is DeRosa's ability to convey complicated mixed emotions with tender, resonating vocals that allows "Pill For This" to rise to the top. Let me reiterate: Charlie, you made a bad decision. But, DeRosa's Songland appearance was not for nothing. McAnally signed her to his Monument Records label. Meanwhile, the song is sitting comfortably at #21 on the iTunes chart.

Keep your eyes on Sam DeRosa!
